Storm and hail damage roof inspection

After hail or a hard wind, use this request to ask independent contractors for an inspection and a price. We do not climb the roof, and we do not decide an insurance claim.
What hail does to a roof
Hail can bruise asphalt, knocking granules off and leaving a soft spot in the mat that is easy to miss from the street. It can dent metal panels without opening a hole. It marks gutters, downspouts, box vents, and flue caps more honestly than it marks a dark shingle, because soft metal holds the dent. Wind lifts tabs, bends flashing, and drops branches. A branch hole and a hail bruise are different repairs. Say which one you are looking at.
What to photograph before anyone visits
- Each slope you can see without climbing, in daylight.
- Gutters, downspout outlets, and piles of granules if you see them.
- Dented vents, flue caps, and window screens.
- The date of the storm, if you know it.
Leave the ladder in the garage. A wet or bruised roof is a poor place to confirm a theory. Put the description in the project details box and let the contractor who accepts the request plan the visit.
Inspection, price, and the insurer
An inspection here means a contractor looks and tells you what they see. It is not a service performed by Coeur d'Alene Roofing Co. If you plan to talk to an insurer, ask the contractor whether their notes are something you can share, and ask the insurer what they require. Matching discontinued shingles, code items at the eaves, and interior stains may or may not be part of a claim. Those are policy questions.
If the slopes are simply worn out and the storm is a coincidence, you may want a replacement quote beside a repair number. Ask for both if you are unsure.
A national planning range, not a local price.
Published U.S. roofing cost guides in recent years commonly place many asphalt shingle replacements around $4 to $8 per square foot of roof surface installed. For an ordinary house that often lands somewhere in a wide band from roughly $6,000 to $18,000, before a steep pitch, a second tear-off, or rotted decking. Metal is often higher: many of those same guides start near $7 per square foot and run past $15 for standing-seam systems. A small repair, such as a pipe boot or a short flashing run, is often quoted in the hundreds of dollars nationally. These figures are general estimates. They are not Coeur d'Alene averages, and they are not a quote. The contractors who respond set their own prices.
Start with the roof you have
Can I see hail damage from the yard?
Sometimes. Dents in gutters, downspouts, and soft metal vents are visible from the ground. Bruises in an asphalt mat often are not. A contractor inspection is how those bruises get checked. Coeur d'Alene Roofing Co does not inspect roofs.
Will insurance pay for a hail roof?
Policies differ. Sudden hail and wind are often listed perils, and many policies also have a wind or hail deductible, a cosmetic-damage clause, or rules about matching shingles that are no longer made. We do not read your policy and we do not file a claim. Ask your insurer, and ask the contractor what they will document.
Is an inspection visit free?
That is the contractor's choice. Ask each person who contacts you whether the visit has a fee and whether the fee is credited if you hire them. This referral service does not set a fee.
